Technical Expert Letters; Shoreline Walking Tour Sunday; Speak Out By Wednesday April 24th

Your generosity at work – thank you!

Many of you responded with generous donations over the past weeks, enabling Protect Mud Bay Cliffs to mobilize our technical experts and land use attorney to review and analyze the application's compliance with city, state, and federal development and environmental regulations. You can read the first of these technical opinion letters from our experts here:

Our land use attorney’s letter and the Protect Mud Bay Cliffs letters will be finalized for submission to the city next week. Together, all of these letters establish a powerful, detailed case that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is needed to minimize the adverse impacts this project is likely to impose on the environment and the safety of the community. For more information about the Severe Application Flaws we will push the city to remedy, please visit Section B of PMBC's Petition at https://mudbaycliffs.org/petition.

Take Action Now!

The Public Comment Period is only open through April 24, 2024. This is our brief open window to submit the information the city will consider in its decisions. It is up to us, and together, we will make the difference!

Please:

  • Donate:  We are very near our initial fundraising goal for this Public Comment period response and the crucial SEPA threshold determination steps. We also anticipate future steps in this process are likely to require additional funds, including the Public Hearing and any appeals of city decisions. Donations help us to keep fighting effectively, and contributions of any size make a difference:  https://mudbaycliffs.org/join-in

    • If you prefer to donate via paper check, the information to mail a check is below the “Donate” button

  • Sign the Petition, here:  https://mudbaycliffs.org/petition – with over 900 signatures already, it is growing daily!

  • Write a Letter! Letters and emails matter; to have impact in this city process, ours need to refer to issues with regulations. You can now also mention three of PMBC’s technical expert letters (see links above). See an example letter to the city here (you can copy-and-paste it):  https://mudbaycliffs.org/updates/example-letter-public-comment

Shoreline Walking Tours of Mud Bay Cliffs this Sunday

Come see what we are fighting for: Bellingham's magical Mud Bay Cliffs, including the public shoreline, the coastal forest, and some of the wildlife, too. Our easy, informal walks along the shoreline at low tide are fun for the whole family.

Protect Mud Bay Cliffs (PMBC) will lead a shoreline walking tour this Sunday 4/21 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM.  We hope you can join us!

We’ll meet at the public access trailhead immediately past 220 Sea Pines Road; please gather on the sidewalk at the top of the paved stairs. Parking is on-street.

This is a straightforward walk at low tide: we will follow a paved pathway down to the shore, and the walk along the shore is on flat pebbled ground.  We suggest: wear a hat and/or sun screen, and wear clothes/ footwear which can get a bit wet and muddy.  Please note: we will not be going onto privately-owned property, so the tour will stay on the shoreline at low tide.

If you have questions, please call Wendy Larson at 360-778-9834.

Sign Up Now for City Updates on the Proposed Project

If you’ve yet to do so, please send an email to Bellingham Senior Planner Kathy Bell (KBell@cob.org) with this request:

"Please accept this email as my request to receive via email all notices regarding the Woods at Viewcrest applications."

Why do this? Reasons include:

  • The Planning Department has asked us to make these requests if we are interested in the proposed subdivision project.

  • The Planning Department and Hearing Examiner need to see a high level of public interest and concern about the proposed development on Mud Bay Cliffs.

Thank you for helping Protect Mud Bay Cliffs!
