Shoreline Walking Tour on Sunday, Donor Generosity, “A Muddy Future for Herons”

Funding Appeal Underway

Donations are urgently needed NOW.

Many of you have responded with generous donations over the past week, and we’re nearly two-thirds of the way toward our goal of $15,000. Now, we need to close the gap!

Please make a tax-deductible donation to Protect Mud Bay Cliffs using the “Donate” button on our website at:

The city’s Public Comment period is open through April 24: only public comment received by the deadline will be considered by the city. Our technical experts and land use attorney are busy reviewing and analyzing the application. These analyses are vital because decisions by the city and the Hearing Examiner will be based on the application's compliance with city, state, and federal development and environmental regulations.

PMBC has mobilized these experts to successfully establish our case that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is needed — and to minimize the adverse impacts this project is likely to impose on the environment and the safety of the community. For more information about the Severe Application Flaws we will push the city to remedy, please visit Section B of PMBC's Petition at https://mudbaycliffs.org/petition.

100% of donations received are used to pursue our mission of protecting Mud Bay Cliffs, and all PMBC members volunteer their time freely.

The Public Comment Period is open through April 24, 2024. It is up to us, and together, we will make the difference. Please:

Shoreline Walking Tours of Mud Bay Cliffs begin this Sunday

Come see what we are fighting for: Bellingham's magical Mud Bay Cliffs, including the public shoreline, the woodlands, and some of the wildlife, too. Four of these popular walks are set for April. Our easy, informal walks along the shoreline at low tide are fun for the whole family.

Protect Mud Bay Cliffs (PMBC) will lead shoreline walking tours on:

  • Sunday 4/7,  11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Saturday 4/13,  2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

  • Sunday 4/14,  2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

  • Sunday 4/21,  11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

We’ll meet at the public access trailhead immediately past 220 Sea Pines Road; please gather on the sidewalk at the top of the paved stairs. Parking is on-street.

This is a straightforward walk at low tide: we will follow a paved pathway down to the shore, and the walk along the shore is on flat pebbled ground.  We suggest: wear a hat and/or sun screen, and wear clothes/ footwear which can get a bit wet and muddy.  Please note: we will not be going onto privately-owned property, so the tour will stay on the shoreline at low tide.

If you have questions, please call Wendy Larson at 360-778-9834.

We hope you can join us!

“A Muddy Future for Herons” – PMBC in the News

A recent article in The Planet Magazine highlights our Protect Mud Bay Cliffs work. The article can be read here:

https://www.theplanetmagazine.net/winter-24-clarity/a-muddy-future-for-herons.

Journalist David Remer and photographer Imogene Eagan did a terrific job capturing the look and feel of this Bellingham gem. The Planet Magazine is dedicated to environmental awareness and advocacy through responsible journalism, and is an entirely student-funded, written, edited, and published environmental publication out of Western Washington University.

Sign Up Now for City Updates on the Proposed Project

If you’ve yet to do so, please send an email to Bellingham Senior Planner Kathy Bell (KBell@cob.org) with this request:

"Please accept this email as my request to receive via email all notices regarding the Woods at Viewcrest applications."

Why do this? Reasons include:

  • The Planning Department has asked us to make these requests if we are interested in the proposed subdivision project.

  • The Planning Department and Hearing Examiner need to see a high level of public interest and concern about the proposed development on Mud Bay Cliffs.

Thank you for helping Protect Mud Bay Cliffs!
