August 10, 2026 Update

On Monday, August 10, before a full house at City Council Chambers, PMBC’s Janet Migaki successfully presented PMBC’s appeal of the Hearing Examiner’s approval of The Woods at Viewcrest Preliminary Plat.

PMBC extends a heartfelt thank you to all the supporters who turned out en masse to fill virtually every seat in the two-level meeting space, sending an important message to Council.

Following the hearing, the six Councilmembers in attendance met in closed session with their legal counsel, Bob Carmichael, who the City hired to independently advise Council on this issue.

Council has taken the matter under advisement and will meet again to deliberate before issuing their written decision.

In the meantime, the latest issue of Whatcom Watch (August 2026) includes a lead article describing how environmental groups working alongside local tribes are attempting to restore Mud Bay as a habitat for the native Olympia oyster, which is a keystone species for both the tribes and the bay.

The article underscores yet another example in which Council’s decision on the Preliminary Plat for The Woods at Viewcrest will have far-reaching implications for both people and wildlife in Mud Bay and the surrounding shoreline.
